ABSTRACT
Objective:
Studies have shown that increased levels of serum uric acid (SUA) are associated with cardiovascular diseases. In this study we investigated the effect of EF(ejection fraction) levels on serum uric acid levels in patients with cardiorenal syndrome.
Methods:
We retrospectively assessed clinical characteristics, echocardiological and biochemical variables in patients with cardiorenal syndrome. 180 patients admitted to the Istanbul Education and Research Hospital were included into the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to EF measurements; 30-45%, <30% respectively.
Results:
As systolic dysfunction progresses, levels of serum uric acid also elevates. In our study there was a significiant difference between EF measurement and serum uric acid in two groups with the cardiorenal syndrome (p<0.01).
Conclusion:
Elevated uric acid (UA) levels have been associated with cardiovascular disease in studies. Our results consistently demonstrated that elevated uric acid levels were independently associated with the degree of left ventricular systolic dysfunction.Hyperuricemia is also a marker of impaired oxidative metabolism, which correlates with left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with the cardiorenal syndrome.
