Purpose:

To evaluate prospectively the cornealastigmatisma before and after pterygium surgery.

Material and Methods:

A consecutive series of 24 eye of 24 patients undergoing primary pterygium removel surgery from september 2004 through may 2005. Patients who had a history of corneal travma, ocular surgery, glocom, keratoconus, using contact lens were excluded from the study. Measurements were repeated at first weekjirst months after surgery. The cornealastigmatisma was calculated based on the simulated keratometry values. The primary pterygium surgery is done at all patients.

Results:

Preoperative cornealastigmatisma 5,54d, postoperative first week 3,50d, postoperative first month 0,85d. The surgery significantly decreased astigmatisma. Astigmatisma signifıcantly corelated with the preoperative pterygium size.

Conclusion:

Successfully pterygium surgery will reduce pterygium-induced refractive astigmatisma and improve visual acuity.
